What in Spanish

“What” in Spanish is qué, pronounced /ke/. It's a pronoun, so it has no gender.

A person with a curious expression and raised eyebrows leans over a closed cardboard box on a table, shrugging slightly with open palms facing upward, as if asking what is inside.

Grammar note

Qué takes an accent when it asks or exclaims: ¿Qué hay en la caja?, ¡Qué bonito! Without the accent, que means that: creo que sí (I think so).

How to remember it

It sounds like the letter k, said kay. The upside-down ¿ at the start of a Spanish question warns you that a qué may be coming.
