But in Spanish
“But” in Spanish is pero, pronounced /ˈpe.ɾo/. It's a conjunction, so it has no gender.
In a sentence
El perro quiere comer la galleta, pero está detrás de la puerta de vidrio.
The dog wants to eat the cookie, but it is behind the glass door.
Grammar note
After a negative, when the second part replaces the first, use sino instead: no es rojo, sino azul (it isn't red but blue). Everywhere else, it's pero.
How to remember it
Pero has one tapped r, a quick flick of the tongue. Roll it and you get perro, dog. The dog in the photo wants the cookie, pero the door is closed.
