Hello in Spanish

“Hello” in Spanish is hola, pronounced /ˈo.la/. It's an interjection, so it has no gender.

A smiling Latin American woman walks into an office in Mexico and greets her coworkers with her hand raised in a wave, while colleagues in the background smile back and return the welcoming gesture.

Grammar note

Hola works at any time of day and with anyone. For something more formal, use buenos días in the morning, buenas tardes in the afternoon and buenas noches in the evening.

How to remember it

The h is silent in Spanish, so hola is said OH-la. Think of the oh you say when you see a friend, then add -la.
