Which Spanish app to use before a trip, and how to set it up
Before a trip, pick one Spanish app that works offline and open it every day until the flight. Pimsleur or Babbel suits a beginner who wants a course, and Duolingo's free tier suits a $0 budget. Expect survival phrases and a few hundred words, because no app makes a beginner conversational in weeks.
The Foreign Service Institute lists Spanish at 30 weeks of full-time class to reach professional working proficiency. At its 23 class hours a week, that's 690 hours.
In a few weeks, a beginner can learn survival phrases, and those make a trip easier.
I'm Colin Taylor. Verbamor, which I build, is one of the apps on this page, and it isn't the right pick for most beginners.
Which Spanish app should I use before a trip?
Pick by the kind of traveler you are. Then check that the app works with no signal. Prices are US prices, dated in the cost section.
| If you are | Pick | Why it fits a trip |
|---|---|---|
| A complete beginner who wants a course | Pimsleur | Pimsleur says each lesson is approximately 30 minutes long. Its App Store listing advertises an offline mode. $19.95 a month, with a 7-day free trial. |
| A beginner who wants short lessons | Babbel | Babbel says most lessons take around 10 to 15 minutes. You download them by unit. Spanish comes in Latin American or Spain versions. |
| On a $0 budget | Duolingo | It has a free tier, where each lesson uses energy. Its App Store listing doesn't mention offline study, so test it in airplane mode. |
| On a $0 budget, and you'd rather listen | Coffee Break Spanish | Each season has free audio podcasts, per its own site. Download the episodes before you fly. |
| Someone who already knows the phrases they need | Verbamor or Quizlet | Both let you study your own phrases offline on a phone. |
A complete beginner who wants a structured course should pick Pimsleur or Babbel. Both are courses, and both say on their own pages that lessons work offline.
Verbamor has no course, no grammar lessons and no placement test. It runs on iPhone and iPad only, with no Android app. AI models (Claude and OpenAI) write its cards, with automated checks and no human review.
Is a free Spanish app enough for a trip?
For survival phrases on a trip a few weeks away, a free app is enough. Duolingo has a free tier, and Coffee Break Spanish publishes free audio podcasts for each season.
The free choice has 2 limits. Duolingo's energy drains as you study (what Duolingo costs has the detail). Its App Store listing also doesn't mention offline study.
Pair a free app with Google Translate's Spanish download for the trip itself. Pay for a month of Pimsleur or Babbel if you want a course that says it works offline.
How much Spanish can I learn before my trip?
You can learn a few hundred words and the survival phrases for daily errands. Professional working proficiency takes far longer: the Foreign Service Institute lists Spanish at 30 weeks of full-time class.
A trip needs far fewer words than fluency does. How many words you actually need before the trip sets the target at 1,000 word families, plus about 150 words only your trip needs.
Here's what 10 new words a day gives you by the flight. The arithmetic is 10 words times days left.
| Time left | Words by the flight | What to learn |
|---|---|---|
| 2 weeks | 140 | Survival phrases: greetings, numbers, ordering, paying, directions. |
| 1 month | 300 | Survival phrases first, then the most common words. |
| 2 months | 600 | Survival phrases, then common words. |
| 3 months | 900 | Survival phrases, then close to the 1,000 most common words. |
Start now, even with 2 weeks left. Cepeda and colleagues reviewed 317 experiments in 2006, and spaced study beat the same study crammed together. By that general finding, 10 words a day for 14 days should stick better than 140 the night before.
What should I learn first?
Learn whole phrases for the things you'll do every day. On most trips that means ordering, paying, directions, check-in and any allergy you have.
A phrase such as ¿Me trae la cuenta, por favor? (Can you bring me the bill, please?) works the moment you say it. Single words take more assembly at the table.
If your app lets you add your own cards, add these phrases first. Soy alérgico a los mariscos (I'm allergic to shellfish) is one worth adding.
In Verbamor, you save a whole phrase from the Translate tab as a card. Its Essentials deck adds about 650 common words in a fixed order.
Which Spanish app works offline?
Babbel, Busuu (with Premium), Pimsleur, Quizlet, Drops (with Premium), Rosetta Stone Classic and Verbamor all say you can study offline. Memrise says its new app has no offline mode. Duolingo's App Store listing doesn't mention offline study.
I read each company's own help page or App Store listing on 17 Oct 2026. The Drops line (12 Oct 2026) and Pimsleur's lesson length (21 Sep 2026) use older reads.
| App | What its own page says | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Babbel | Download a unit from the Learn tab, then do its lessons offline. | Offline lessons don't count toward your streak unless you reconnect the same day. |
| Busuu | Download lessons in advance, with a Premium subscription. | Busuu warns that downloads "may be erased when updating the app or clearing app caches." |
| Memrise | "There is no offline mode in the new experience." | Every session needs a connection. |
| Pimsleur | "No Internet needed with offline mode," per its App Store listing. | Each lesson is approximately 30 minutes long, per Pimsleur's FAQ. |
| Quizlet | Flashcards and Match work offline in the iPhone and Android apps. | Quizlet saves only your 8 most recently used sets automatically. |
| Drops | Premium lists "Learn Offline." | Drops publishes no price on its site. |
| Rosetta Stone | The Classic (2024) app says "Download lessons to do everything offline." | Classic is for existing subscribers. New buyers get Sapphire, whose listing doesn't mention offline. |
| Duolingo | Its App Store listing doesn't mention offline study. | Test it in airplane mode before you rely on it. |
| Verbamor | Study works offline, and your ratings sync when you reconnect. | The full download of pictures and audio is opt-in and Wi-Fi only. Making new cards needs a connection. |
| Google Translate | Download Spanish to translate with no connection. | Google says to download languages on Wi-Fi. |
Offline mode can fail when you need it. A 1-star App Store review of Babbel says "Offline mode never works even with lessons downloaded". A 1-star App Store review of Rosetta Stone says "Does not work offline. You cannot even open the app".
So test offline at home, while you can still fix it.
How do I prepare my phone before I fly?
Do this 3 or 4 days before you leave, on home Wi-Fi:
- Update your study app.
- Update Google Translate.
- Download your lessons or cards in the study app.
- Download the Spanish language in Google Translate.
- Turn off automatic app updates until you're home.
- Turn on airplane mode.
- Open the study app.
- Finish 5 cards or 1 lesson.
- Translate 1 sentence in Google Translate.
- Turn off airplane mode.
Busuu warns that an app update can erase downloaded lessons. That's why the updates come before the downloads.
If step 8 or 9 fails at home, it will fail on the plane too.
In Verbamor, add 2 steps:
- At step 3, turn on the Wi-Fi-only download of every picture and recording.
- Set the goal countdown to your trip date.
How much does a Spanish app cost for one trip?
Expect about $18 to $20 for a month of Babbel, Pimsleur, Rosetta Stone or Verbamor (US prices). Duolingo has a free tier, and Super Duolingo's App Store prices run from $9.99 to $119.99.
| Plan | Price | Trial | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verbamor Explorer | $19.99 a month | No trial | 21 Sep 2026, the app's plan definitions |
| Verbamor Native | $129.99 a year (about $10.83 a month) | 7-day free trial | 21 Sep 2026, the app's plan definitions |
| Babbel | $17.95 for 1 month | No trial length published | 5 Sep 2026, my.babbel.com |
| Pimsleur Premium | $19.95 a month | 7-day free trial | 21 Sep 2026, pimsleur.com |
| Super Duolingo | $9.99 to $119.99 on the App Store, by term and plan | 14-day free trial | 24 Sep 2026, App Store |
| Rosetta Stone | $19.99 a month, or $159 a year | None named at checkout | 12 Oct 2026, rosettastone.com |
Babbel's price is the oldest here, and Babbel often runs sales. Check it on the day you buy.
For a trip 2 months away, Verbamor's monthly plan costs $39.98 in total. The yearly plan costs $129.99, and its 7-day trial covers only the first week.
So I'd pick monthly for a short window. If you'll keep studying after the trip, the yearly plan costs less from month 7.
Cancel when you're home if you're done. You cancel an App Store plan in iPhone Settings, under your name.
Questions people ask before a trip
Can I learn Spanish in a month before a trip?
A month is enough for survival phrases and a few hundred words. At 10 new words a day, 30 days gives you 300 words. Professional working proficiency takes far longer: the Foreign Service Institute lists Spanish at 30 weeks of full-time class.
Is a free Spanish app enough for a short trip?
For survival phrases on a trip a few weeks away, yes. Duolingo has a free tier, and Coffee Break Spanish publishes free audio podcasts for each season. Duolingo's App Store listing doesn't mention offline study, so test it in airplane mode at home.
Which Spanish apps work offline?
Per their own pages, read in October 2026, Babbel, Pimsleur, Quizlet, Rosetta Stone Classic and Verbamor support offline study. Busuu and Drops list it as a Premium feature. Memrise says its new app has no offline mode, and Duolingo's App Store listing doesn't mention it.
Do I need a translator app as well as a study app?
Yes, for the trip itself. A study app prepares you before you leave, and a translator covers the menu or sign you never studied. Google Translate can download Spanish for use with no connection, and Google advises downloading it on Wi-Fi.
Should I cancel my Spanish app after the trip?
Cancel it when you're home if you won't keep studying. You cancel an App Store subscription in iPhone Settings, under your name. You cancel a plan bought on a company's website on that website.
