Language apps for adults that aren't gamified

A language app that isn't gamified has no leagues, leaderboards, gems or chests to chase. Language Transfer, Anki and Mango come closest, while Babbel, Pimsleur and LingQ all keep a streak.

Verbamor’s Today screen: a session of 12 words due, about six minutes, with a Study now button, the week’s streak, and an estimate of how many words you’ll still know in a month.

Verbamor opens on one short session a day: the words that are due, and about how long they’ll take.

A language app that isn't gamified has no leagues, leaderboards, gems or chests to chase. For adults, Language Transfer, Anki and Mango come closest: I found no game parts in their app code, manual or help centre.

Babbel, Pimsleur and LingQ teach through lessons or reading, but each one keeps a streak. Pimsleur adds points and badges, and LingQ adds coins and leaderboards.

I checked 8 apps for each game part, and for a way to disable it. One is Verbamor, which I build, and it keeps a streak too.

Is there a language app that isn't gamified?

Yes, but very few. Here's what each company's own site, help centre, App Store listing or code said on 17 and 18 Oct 2026.

AppLeagues or leaderboardsIn-app currencyStreakStreak freezePoints, rewards or challengesCan you disable it?
Duolingo Yes: 10 weekly leagues, ranked by XP Gems, spent in a Shop Yes Hold up to 2, bought with gems XP, timed challenges, the Diamond Tournament Leagues, by making your profile private on the web
LingQ Yes, inside challenges you join Coins, earned by studying Yes, kept by a daily coin goal Repair a missed day for 5,000 coins Challenges, badges and levels You join each challenge yourself. Not stated for the streak.
Pimsleur Not stated Points, redeemed for rewards Yes Not stated Daily challenges, achievements, badges, 2 games Yes, you can disable the points program
Babbel Not stated Not stated Yes, resets to zero 2 a week, applied automatically Not stated Not stated
Verbamor (mine) None None Yes, resets to 1 None XP The daily reminder has an on/off switch.
Mango None found None found None found None found None found Nothing found to disable
Anki None found None found None found None found None found Nothing found to disable
Language Transfer None found None found None found None found None found Nothing found to disable. It needs no sign-up.

"None found" means I searched the app's own material and found no mention. That's Mango's 90 help articles, Anki's manual and screens, and Language Transfer's code.

"Not stated" means the pages I read didn't say either way. I didn't install every app, so a part no page names could still exist.

Older app roundups still call Duolingo's paid plan "Duolingo Plus" and describe hearts. Duolingo's App Store listing sells Super Duolingo, and Energy has replaced hearts.

Some AI answers also list Babbel and Pimsleur as apps without streaks or points. Babbel's help centre and Pimsleur's FAQ both describe a streak, and Pimsleur's FAQ describes points and rewards too.

Why do language apps feel like a game?

The game brings people back, and Duolingo says so itself. Its blog calls the streak part of Duolingo's "gamified learning experience".

The same post, updated 9 Jun 2026, says the streak taps "loss aversion". That's a bias, Duolingo writes, that makes you "particularly averse to losing something, like a learning streak."

Leagues add competition. Duolingo starts a new weekly league every Sunday and ranks learners by XP. Diamond is the top of 10 leagues.

Plenty of adults don't want this. A 2-star App Store review of Duolingo says: "I came to learn a language, not compete with other people".

A 1-star App Store review of Duolingo puts it more bluntly: "I want to learn a language not collect little badges and toys".

Can you turn off leagues in Duolingo?

Yes, on the web, by making your profile private. Duolingo's own blog answers the question with "Leaderboards aren't for everyone."

A 2-star App Store review of Duolingo says: "I don’t care for the leagues but can’t turn them off". Duolingo's blog links to a privacy settings page that holds the switch.

  1. Sign in at duolingo.com in a web browser.
  2. Open duolingo.com/settings/privacy, the page Duolingo's blog links to.
  3. Disable "Make My Profile Public".

Duolingo says this disables Leaderboards. The cost is your public profile. The post doesn't say the switch changes your streak, XP or gems.

If you'd rather replace Duolingo, apps like Duolingo checks the alternatives one by one.

Does Babbel have streaks?

Yes. Babbel's help centre says that if you miss a day, "your streak will reset to zero at midnight."

Babbel's streak is the gentlest I found. Every learner gets 2 streak freezes a week, and Babbel applies one automatically when you miss a day.

Is Pimsleur gamified?

Partly. Pimsleur's core is 30-minute audio lessons.

Around that core sits a game layer. Pimsleur's FAQ describes points you redeem for rewards, daily challenges, achievements, badges and a learning streak.

Premium courses add the Speed Round and Quick Match games. You can disable the points program. Then, Pimsleur says, "you will no longer earn points or make progress towards challenges."

Is LingQ gamified?

Yes, more than its homepage suggests. The homepage sells LingQ against the game: "You've tried traditional methods and gamified drilling apps."

LingQ's own help centre calls the streak "your main success metric". You keep it by earning a daily goal of coins from reading, listening and saving words.

If you miss your daily goal, LingQ lets you repair the streak for 5,000 coins.

Challenges add leaderboards and badges. You join each challenge yourself, and LingQ invites you to race other learners "to the top of the leaderboard".

Which apps have no game parts at all?

Language Transfer, Anki and Mango show no game parts in their own material.

Language Transfer teaches through audio lessons. Its app is open source, and its code (as of 2 Oct 2026) never mentions a streak, XP, rewards, achievement badges or a leaderboard.

Anki is a flashcard engine with no language content of its own. Its manual and its desktop screens never mention a streak, league, leaderboard or badge.

Mango teaches through lessons with spaced review. Its App Store listing promises "NO ADS", and its 90 help articles never mention a streak, badge or leaderboard.

Is there a non-gamified app that costs nothing?

Yes. The same 3 apps can cost nothing.

  • Language Transfer. It has "no adverts, no sign-ups", and it runs on donations.
  • Mango, through your library. Patrons use it "with just their library card", but only if the library subscribes. Ask at the desk.
  • Anki on a computer or Android. The desktop app and AnkiDroid cost nothing. AnkiMobile on iPhone costs US$24.99 once (read 13 Oct 2026).

Language Transfer's Free Courses page lists 11 courses, including Spanish, French, Italian, German and Japanese. None is Portuguese or Russian.

On 18 Oct 2026, the iPhone link on Language Transfer's app page led to a missing App Store page. Its website plays each course in the page, or on SoundCloud or YouTube.

How can you tell if an app is gamified before you pay?

Check 5 things on the app's help centre or App Store page.

  • Can you hide your rank? If the app has leagues or leaderboards, look for a way to disable them. Duolingo's way is a private profile.
  • Is there an in-app currency? An app with gems, coins or points usually has a shop or rewards.
  • What does a missed day cost? Check whether the streak resets. Then check whether a freeze is automatic or costs gems or coins.
  • Can you disable reminders? Look for an on/off switch and a time picker.
  • Are wrong answers punished? Hearts, lives or Energy can limit how much you study in a day.

Does Verbamor have leagues or a streak?

Verbamor has no leagues, leaderboards, gems, badges, hearts, energy or ads. It does have a streak and XP.

Miss a day and the streak resets to 1. Verbamor has no freeze, so on this point Babbel's 2 freezes a week are kinder.

The daily reminder has an on/off switch and a time picker. The app can also send an evening streak reminder, and messages after 3, 7 and 14 days away.

You study cards built from your own lessons and reading, and FSRS-6 schedules them. You grade each card with 4 buttons, and the app never marks an answer wrong.

It runs on iPhone and iPad and teaches 5 languages. If you record a lesson or conversation, ask the other people first.

Who should pick a different app?

Verbamor fits an adult who wants to review their own words without a league. Plenty of adults want something else.

  • You like to compete. Keep Duolingo. If leagues get you to study, they're doing their job, and the top 10 in Diamond can enter a tournament.
  • You want a full course with grammar. Pick Babbel. Verbamor has no course beyond Essentials, a starter deck of about 650 common words, and no grammar lessons.
  • You want to learn hands-free. Pick Pimsleur or Language Transfer. Both teach through audio you can play on a commute. On iPhone, play Language Transfer on SoundCloud or YouTube.
  • You use Android. Verbamor won't run on your phone. AnkiDroid and Mango both do.

If you're learning Spanish, the best way to learn Spanish as an adult prices every route.
