Spanish apps for intermediate learners, by weak skill
An intermediate learner (CEFR B1 to B2) needs an app that starts with real Spanish at their level and keeps the new words. By weak skill: Langua or an italki tutor for speaking, Dreaming Spanish for listening, Readlang for reading, Ella Verbs for verbs, Busuu for a course.
Intermediate means CEFR B1 to B2. The gaps there are usually vocabulary, listening speed, free speaking and verb tenses. I don't know of one app that covers all 4 well, so pick by your weak skill:
- Speaking: Langua for AI conversation, or an italki tutor.
- Listening: Dreaming Spanish, whose levels 3 and 4 of 7 are intermediate.
- Reading: Readlang, or LingQ for reading with audio.
- Verbs: Ella Verbs, or ConjuGato for a one-time price.
- A structured course: Busuu, whose Complete Spanish course runs from A1 to C1.
- Keeping new words: a spaced-repetition app, such as Anki or Verbamor, which I build.
Since I build one of these apps, weigh what I say about it. No link on this page is an affiliate link.
Each pick had to show a US price on its own site or App Store listing, so I could read and date it. I read most prices on 17 and 18 Oct 2026, and the table dates each one.
I didn't spend weeks inside each app, so treat these picks as a shortlist to test. The 10-minute level test below tells you if an app fits you before you pay.

What's the best Spanish app for speaking practice at B1?
Langua is the speaking pick. Its own page asks: “Stuck in the Intermediate plateau?” You talk with an AI partner whose voices are cloned from native speakers.
Standard costs $19.99 a month, with calls capped at 30 minutes a day. Unlimited costs $29.99 a month (read 17 Oct 2026). Billed yearly, they equal $12.50 and $16.67 a month.
Langua lets you start a conversation before you subscribe. Its guided course is for A1 and A2. Skip Langua if you'd rather talk to a real person, who can see when you're lost.
An italki tutor is that real person. The italki price guide puts community tutors at $4 to $20 a lesson, and professional teachers at $10 to $40 (read 13 Oct 2026).
Skip italki if you can't keep a booked time each week. Ask your tutor first if you want to record a lesson.
What's the best app for intermediate Spanish listening?
Dreaming Spanish is the listening pick. Dreaming makes every video in Spanish and sorts them into 7 levels. Its FAQ calls levels 3 and 4 “Intermediate videos”.
Premium costs $7.99 a month and adds 7,200+ exclusive videos and offline downloads. There's a $0 plan and no yearly plan (read 17 Oct 2026).
Skip it if you'd rather read than watch. Its FAQ also argues against learning words out of context, so look elsewhere for flashcards.
What's the best app for Spanish reading and new vocabulary?
Readlang lets you click a word or phrase on any web page to translate it. It saves every word you translate as a flashcard.
The $0 plan allows 10 phrase translations a day. Premium costs $6 a month or $48 a year (read 17 Oct 2026). Skip it if you'd rather listen than read.
LingQ teaches through reading and listening to real content at your level, with spaced-repetition review. Its App Store listing shows Premium at $14.99 a month or $119.99 a year (read 18 Oct 2026).
What's the best app for Spanish verb conjugation?
Ella Verbs is the verb pick. It teaches conjugation in 50 levels, from the present tense to the subjunctive, covering 18 tenses. Its quizzes use spaced repetition.
Its App Store listing shows monthly plans at $6.49 and $7.99, and yearly plans at $29.99 and $39.99 (read 18 Oct 2026).
ConjuGato costs $9.99 once, with no subscription. The free version has 250 common verbs. Pro raises that to 1,750 verbs, “including many advanced ones that B1–B2 learners may need”.
Skip both if verbs aren't your weak skill.
Which app has a structured intermediate Spanish course?
Busuu is the course pick. Its Complete Spanish course runs from A1 to C1, with 510+ lessons. Its App Store listing shows plans from $6.99 to $139.99 (read 18 Oct 2026).
Pick a course if you want grammar taught in order. Skip one if you already know the grammar and mostly lack words and listening time.
How do I combine apps at the intermediate level?
Use one input source, one speaking source and one place to keep words. Here's a week I'd call realistic:
- Watch Dreaming Spanish for 20 minutes a day.
- Have 2 speaking sessions of 30 minutes a week, with a tutor or Langua.
- Save 5 to 10 new words from each session.
- Practice those words for 10 minutes a day in a spaced-repetition app.
If you'd rather read, use Readlang in step 1. That week takes about 4.5 hours. Input is the biggest share, at 140 minutes.
The best way to learn Spanish as an adult has the full plan.
How can I tell if a Spanish app is at my level?
Count the words you don't know. Paul Nation (2006) uses 98% of words known as the line for understanding without help. That's 1 unknown word in 50.
Run this test on an app's intermediate content before you pay:
- Open a lesson or article at the app's intermediate level.
- Read the first 50 words.
- Write down each word you don't know.
- Repeat with 2 more passages.
About 1 unknown word in 50 means the level fits you. 0 means the app is too easy for you.
At 3 or more, you know less than 95% of the words, and you'll need a dictionary often.
Readlang's $0 plan lets you run it on any Spanish web page.
Is Duolingo too easy for intermediate Spanish?
Before April 2026, it was for most B1 learners. Duolingo says most Spanish learners could then only complete content up to A2, a Duolingo Score of 59.
On 22 April 2026, Duolingo said its Spanish course now teaches through B2, a Score of 129. The new lessons aim to help you “understand news, movies, and jokes”.
Duolingo's post describes course content, with no count of learners who reach B2. If you quit Duolingo in 2024 for being too easy, run the level test on its B2 content.
Why do beginner apps stall intermediate learners?
Beginner apps stall intermediate learners in 2 ways. They restart you near zero, and they choose which words you practice.
A 1-star App Store review of Babbel from 2023 said: “I’m an intermediate speaker and I was defaulted to saying hello and goodbye”. A 1-star App Store review of Jumpspeak, from July 2026, said: “I was conversant in Spanish and it still started me at beginner”.
Babbel's help centre says: “It is not possible to manually add random words or phrases to your review”. So Babbel's Review feature holds only words from its own lessons.
At B1, I think most of your new words come from outside any course, such as a podcast or a tutor. My post on learning plateaus covers why progress slows at this stage.
Where does Verbamor fit for an intermediate learner?
Verbamor keeps the words you meet in your own Spanish. It makes flashcards from your recorded lessons and conversations, and from words you save in its Translate tab.
Each Spanish flashcard has the word, an example sentence, a picture and native-accent audio. FSRS-6 schedules every flashcard. AI writes the text and pictures, with automated checks and no human review.
Now the losses. Verbamor has no grammar lessons, no curriculum and no placement test. Its starter deck, Essentials, has about 650 common words, which is basic for B1.
It has no AI conversation partner. It needs an iPhone or iPad, and there's no Android or web app. If you want structured B1 to B2 lessons, pick Busuu or a tutor instead.
It costs $19.99 a month, or $129.99 a year with a 7-day free trial. Those are US prices from the app's plan definitions, read 21 Sep 2026. Recording other people needs their permission.
Questions people ask
What level is intermediate Spanish?
Intermediate Spanish is CEFR B1 and B2. Duolingo maps its own Score to the same scale: 60 to 99 is B1 and 100 to 129 is B2. Duolingo says that at 129 you're an 'independent user' who can 'express your viewpoints on a wide range of topics'.
How many Spanish words does an intermediate learner need?
Paul Nation (2006) estimates 6,000 to 7,000 word families to understand English speech without help, at 98% of the words known. With 3,000 word families plus proper nouns, you know about 95%, or about 7 unknown words a minute. Nation studied English, so treat these as rough targets for Spanish.
Can an app get me from B1 to B2 on its own?
An app can give you input at your level and help you keep new words. I think B2 also needs regular free speaking in real time, with a person or an AI partner.
Is there a free Spanish app for intermediate learners?
Several apps on this page have a $0 option. Duolingo has a free tier, and Dreaming Spanish has a $0 plan. Readlang's $0 plan allows 10 phrase translations a day. ConjuGato's free version has 250 common verbs, and Anki's desktop app is free.
