The 650 Italian words that carry most conversations
In frequency order, with the English meaning for each. The first 100 are right here on the page. Your email gets you the other 523, plus the complete method for making them stick.
Word frequency is brutally top-heavy. In spoken-corpus studies, the most frequent ~1,000 word families cover roughly 85% of everyday speech, and the curve is steepest at the very top. The words below sit on that steep part: concrete, picturable, and worth knowing in any Italian conversation you're likely to have.
This is the exact list every Verbamor learner's deck is seeded with on day one (we build on Wyner's Fluent Forever base list, tuned by our card-quality pipeline). Nothing on this page is paywalled inside the app; we're giving you the list because the list was never the hard part. Making 650 words stick is.

The method, step 1: capture from your real lessons
The 650 are your floor. The vocabulary that actually makes you conversational comes from your own life: your tutor's corrections, the words you reached for mid-sentence and didn't have.
So after every lesson, while it's still warm, spend 10 minutes writing down three things: every new word or phrase with the sentence it appeared in, every correction your tutor made, and every moment you bailed into English. That last list is gold. Those are the words you demonstrably needed.
Context matters more than volume. "quedarse" on its own is a dictionary entry; "me quedé en casa toda la semana" is a memory with a hook in it. Always keep the sentence.
We wrote a full 10-minute protocol for this, free like this one: the post-lesson debrief.
Step 2: build cards that actually work
The research-backed card format (Wyner's Fluent Forever lays this out well) has three parts:
- A picture, ideally instead of an English translation. Your memory holds images far better than word pairs, and skipping the English keeps you from translating in your head.
- Native audio. Every card should say the word aloud in a native voice. Forvo.com has free recordings for almost any Italian word.
- A fill-in-the-blank sentence. Show the sentence with the word missing and produce it from memory. Production is the workout; recognition is a warm-up.
Done honestly, a card like this takes 2 to 3 minutes to build: find an image, find audio, write the cloze. For 10 new words per lesson, twice a week, that's about an hour a week of card assembly.
Step 3: schedule reviews so words come back right before they slip
Reviewing everything every day drowns you by week three. The fix is spaced repetition: each word comes back right before you'd forget it, and every successful catch pushes the next review further out. Days become weeks, then months.
In practice you'll want software for the scheduling (Anki with FSRS turned on is the strongest free option; our setup guide walks every setting). Aim for a 90% retention target and grade yourself honestly: a peek at the answer counts as a miss.
Step 4: read your own transcripts once a month
Record yourself speaking Italian for 2 or 3 minutes (or record a lesson, with your tutor's OK). Then read the transcript like an editor and ask three questions:
- Which words did I reach for and not have? Those go straight onto cards.
- Where did I switch back to English? Each switch marks a gap worth drilling.
- Which tenses am I avoiding? If everything you said is present tense, that's your next lesson topic.
This is the same analysis Verbamor runs automatically on every recording, and you can do a useful manual version in half an hour. Our lesson-setup guide includes an exact AI prompt that does the heavy lifting for you.
The honest bill
Everything above works. It's the same method behind every polyglot YouTube channel you've seen, and the research under each step is solid. Here's what it costs to run by hand, per week, for a two-lesson week:
- Post-lesson debriefs: 2 × 10 minutes
- Building ~20 cards with images, audio, and cloze sentences: about an hour
- Schedule upkeep, fixing leeches, tuning settings: 15 minutes
- Monthly transcript review, amortized: 10 minutes
Call it 2 hours a week of pure admin, on top of the reviews themselves, on top of your lessons. Every week, for months. Most people who quit this method don't quit because it stopped working. They quit because the admin is a second job.
If you're the kind of person who enjoys that hour with a coffee on Sunday, genuinely: enjoy it. This page plus the Anki guide is everything you need.
